Information on Running as a Write-In Candidate
for ANC Commissioner

It's not too late to run for ANC. The deadline to have your name on the ballot passed on September 5, 2008.  However, you can still run as a write-in candidate.

The qualifications for a write-in candidate are the same as for someone whose name is on the ballot:

  • You must have lived in your Single Member District (SMD) for 60 days prior to November 4, Election Day. (In other words, you must have moved in by September 5, 2008).
  •  You must be a registered voter in the District of Columbia.
  • And you must file a "Affirmation of Write-In Candidacy" with the Board of Elections. You can file this statement any time up until 4:45 pm on Wednesday, November 12.

Contact the Board of Elections at (202)727-2525 if you have additional questions about becoming a write-in candidate or meeting the qualifications. They can also help you verify what ANC and SMD you live in. (You can also contact the Office of Advisory Neighborhood Commissions at (202) 727-9945 for help.)

The Board will give you an information packet. It includes a map of your SMD boundaries, and, among other things, the campaign finance rules.

You may accept up to $25 per person in campaign contributions. You must report the total amount of your contributions and expenses to the Office of Campaign Finance following the election.

The winners of the November 4 election will be sworn in on January 2, 2009
